Common Questions Before You Set Off

Straight answers about how our expeditions run, what to pack, and how to reach us if your question is not listed here.

Ask Our Trip Desk

How fit do I need to be for a coastal trekking route?

Each itinerary lists a difficulty rating from easy to demanding. Coastal trails like the Amalfi week involve four to six hours of walking daily with some steep stone steps, so a baseline of regular hiking helps. Highland and island routes are more moderate. If you are unsure, send us your usual walking routine and we will match you with a suitable departure.

What is included in the expedition price?

Your package covers guided walks, homestay or guesthouse accommodation, most meals, local transport between trailheads, permits, and a gear checklist before you leave. Flights to the start point, travel insurance, and personal snacks are not included. We send a full breakdown with your booking confirmation so there are no surprises.

Can I join a small group as a solo traveler?

Yes. Roughly a third of our guests travel alone. Groups are capped at twelve people, and single rooms are available at most homestays for a modest supplement. You will be part of the group from day one, with shared meals and evening briefings that make it easy to settle in.

How far in advance should I book a seasonal departure?

Popular coastal and island departures fill two to three months ahead, especially in late spring and early autumn. Highland routes have more flexibility. If you have fixed dates, book at least six weeks out so we can confirm permits and homestay spaces. Last-minute spots do open up, so it is worth asking.

What happens if the weather turns bad mid-trip?

Our guides carry a revised route plan for every stage. If a coastal path becomes unsafe, we switch to a lower valley alternative or a cultural visit such as a local market or craft workshop. The day still runs, just differently. We do not cancel a whole expedition for one stormy day.

Do I need special gear for wildlife viewing trips?

For island expeditions like the Azores, bring binoculars, a light rain shell, and sturdy shoes for volcanic trails. Boat trips provide life jackets and basic waterproofs. We send a detailed packing list two weeks before departure, and you can borrow binoculars from our base if you prefer not to carry your own.
